I have been using my sugar boards with the 1/4" mesh on them as a bottom board for ventilation. Any reason that I should not be doing that? I couldn't think of any, but I have been told that I am not the sharpest knife in the drawer..... :-D You know what I mean. Just thought that I would ask.

Does the sugar board have a lid on it?  Which way is it?  You do need between 1/4" and 1" space between the bottom of the bottom box and the bottom of the bottom board.  A reversible usually has 3/8" on one side and 3/4" on the other or something close to that.

I've run hives with no bottom boards.  As long as the hive is strong enough to defend against robbing,  they will be fine.
