Natural comb

This is a hive that I had fed some fondant earlier in the year. (Ok, last spring...and I forgot  ) Of course, after leaving the empty box above the inner cover, the bees did what they do best. They filled in the space and most of it is capped honey. I'll wait till next spring to deal with this.

The lower left corner has a comb missing as it came up with the top.

How interesting that they went diagonally instead of horizontally like the frames below!  Great pic!  J

The diagonal is consistent with my experience.  Give their own head, they almost always go from corner to corner.

That is a really interesting picture.  I see that and just think of all the honey and wax I would get from a crush and strain.

No, I left on an empty box. The top of the comb looks funky as it was connected to the hive top.

LOL i know yours was a mistake, from your post. I was wondering if Mike Bushs' was a mistake. The comb is so even and pristene, thought he was trying something different just to get a result.

An accidental experiment.  :)  Actually I had done it many years ago as an experiment.  But I didn't have a digital camera back in 1976 :)

The picture is of comb that was drawn in a top feeder.  Why they moved into the top feeder is a bit of a mystery to me.

Yes. I was thinking about feeding it to a weak hive as it would be easy to just move the inner cover, box and all. But decided to deal with it come spring.

I did a few cutouts this year, in a ceiling that the space between the boards was about the same as a hive body, the sections with honey were all exactly like the picture.
