I am wondering about putting hay around the bee hive to smother the grass. It will last for a year or so and mean that I do not have to trim right up against the bee hive. Any thoughts? Living on a farm w/cattle means there is always wasted hay around, that's why I was thinking of it. My concern would be if it got a bit moldy inside and caused an unplesant odor.

Hey bro :)

Shouldn't be a problem at all. I'd only be worried if it had caustic/chemical odors or blocked the entrance.

sounds like a practical solution to a problem we all face
I imagine the hay would work fine, I don't see a problem

We bailed the hay ourselves, it's fresh hay, nothing added.
