I inspector came out today, and we inspected my two hives.  My larger, first hive is doing well, working on two honey supers, and we found only one varroa mite. However, my smaller, captured swarm hive is another story. I waited and waited for the queen cells to hatch and for her to start laying. Well she finally did, and she was doing great. Last week I had been anticipating a huge population jump. Today, upon inspection we found nothing happening in the upper deep, a LOT of capped queen cells, no eggs, no uncapped brood, a fair amount of capped brood, and no more workers than I had a couple weeks ago!
Looking back to last week, over a couple of days I heard the hum of bees in the large maple trees near the edge of my yard. I didn't see any bees so I didn't give it another thought. Now I realize that my young carnolian queen and the new bees I have been waiting for swarmed! On the brighter side of this, we found no varroa, and there is a decent amount of capped brood and honey in the lower deep. We put two full frames of honey into the upper deep to entice them to start working up there. Also, there is still enough time with the liatris, buckwheat, asters and goldenrod for them to build up their winter stores. Still, I want to cry!
