I am putting together a bee presentation and wanted to use the word locavore but also know I have seen it spelled localvore. Seems the two are interchangeable when looking up a definition. So which do you think to be correct? Is one more correct?

Both by the way are not in the beemaster spellcheck.... ;)

So what say you?

Thank you.

BjornBee,

I have read it spelled " Locavore " in an article regarding people whom only grow or eat foods/animals in their immediate area of residence, almost as if they had phobias to where or what they ate outside their region. I can't recall the article. Hope this helps.

BH,
Yes, there seems to be the radical fringe in most stuff. But it is not a phobia per say, just some thoughtful people wanting to make a difference.

"locavores" from I have read, are people who want to purchase as much of the food as they can from local sources, for two main reasons. 1) To lower the carbon footprint of such products. Imagine sipping a bottle of water in California shipped in from France, which is no better than the water bottled locally or in some cases...the tap from inside the house. 2) To support local farming and encourage self sustaining practices. How many buy tomatoes shipped in from around the world while a farmers market has local veggies right around the corner. (And as a beekeeper who pollinates on many family farms.....It beats the crap out of any supermarket stuff they have sitting on the shelves.)

I realize the global market allows us to buy corn in January and so on. I don't get radical on such matters as I like corn all year long. Locavores do seem to try to buy items in season and adjust dishes as much as possible using local products. I like the concept.

I'm giving a bee talk and touching on the matter and this is a theme I have started to incorporate into some promotional items with the national honey bee day program. I think for an industry (bees) that imports over 50% of the honey we consume, it would be nice to promote locally produced honey and include honey in any "locavore" theme.

I'll go with "locavores". Thanks.

I like to practice No. 2 . I support my local farmers as much as I can. I must have eaten 500 lbs of NJ peaches  this summer   :-X
