I have been looking for 3/8 mesh wire to make mouse guards with no luck.  In the past I have used 1/2 and it worked most of the time but had a few problems.  Yesterday I made new one by taking a 4 1/2 pc of 1/2" and folded it then stapled it to a 3/4X3/4X16 1/4 inch pc of wood.  The folded edge is down so I wont have the problem of cut wires catching and polking me.  This made a very ridged about 3/8 guard

Most of my hives are far enough off the ground that the mice have stayed away so far.  The one closer (single cinder block height) I have used 1/4" hardware cloth and it works fine.  My problem is finding 1/8" anymore.
Everyone said it couldn't be done. But he with a chuckle replied, "I won't be one to say it is so, until I give it a try."  So he buckled right in with a trace of a grin.  If he had a worry he hid it and he started to sing as he tackled that thing that couldn't be done, and he did it.  (unknown)

Back when I had mouse guards and no top entrances, I used 1/4"

Do you just cover the whole entrance with the hardware cloth and then the bees just come and go throught the mesh?
