that's pretty interesting. just goes to show that beekeeping can be done in a lot of different ways, and be successful. i'd love to see the inside also.

You are looking at it bee houses. Beehives are inside the bee houses.

Jim is correct. I have a beekeeper I know from Poland. She has a photo album of her travels to Poland, and they have very interesting bee houses. Some are huge animals carved into big logs, which are carved out and have bees going in places as example....a bears mouth. There is actually a bee museum in Poland (not sure where) that has collected and preserved some of them, with perhaps several dozens very ornate carved logged, houses, and figures. They are from years past, although the idea of a bee house is still utilized today. Many of them utilized the "leaf hive" approach of having frames pulled straight out the back.

i like the idea of pulling them out the back. it makes a lot of sense. no more unstacking boxes to check the bottom. any good reason back access boxes are not so popular?

The hives you had pictures, and the ones I was referencing, are not bee houses. They are the actual beehives themselves.

I can not get a hold of the lady to find out where the polish museum is located, but I did find this site, which I think is it. It you read the information, it states about a bear, and other beehives. It was really common to make these structures. I remember the bear in the pictures as the bees flew in and out of the bears mouth.

Yes, I thought they were individual hives as that is what the fellow called them.
just can't figure out their operation.

I have seen a number of bee houses they were entirely different, neatest one was a converted school bus.
they would move from site too site, I believe they had 3 rows of hives on each side, a walk/work way down the middle.

Klaus Honighäuschen, a German beekeeper a few years ago lead me to Birgit Jönsson's website. She is one of the few left carrying on the tradition of sculptured hived from the 17th Century. They are pretty incredible. :shock:

Here is another picture I found on that site;
They appear to be about 32 in square, and perhaps 36 in high, there appear to be one entrance and what look like two small side doors ?
Still haven't figured out how they work. Any Polish Beekeepers out there ?

First off let me say this in all assurance. I am full blooded Polish. I believe the hives you are looking at have a front entrance; one big, hinged door on the back; and a series of fixed starter strips at the top that would be perpendicular to you when you open the door. As far as I know the idea was you could open the door and look in and select which comb you wanted to take and cut or break it off. The bees could then rebuild. Kind of like a huge top bar hive.

so no removable frames? seems to me you could do removable frames without much trouble. someone would have to invent something to lift loose the first frame you wanted to pull but after that, sliding them free shouldn't be to hard. a regular hive tool would do it.
