startup questions

i'll be starting four langstroth hives (using two deep 8 frame hive bodies and medium supers) this spring and i have a couple of questions.

when i pick up my nucs what do i need to transport 5 frame nucs myself a couple hundred highway miles?

when the bees have built 8 frames of comb do i put the second hive body above or below the existing hive body?

when do i place the first medium super on the deep hive bodies?

a hardy horse, or a vehicle. :evil: your nucs should be ready for transport. if you have concerns, contact the person you are getting them from and see if there is anything they recommend.

my preference is to put them under. bees usually build down.

depends on where you are, what your bees are doing, and the nectar flow in your area. if you will add your location in your profile, local beekeepers may be able to help you out.

what signs within the hive should i see when the time is right to place the first super on the hive boxes

thanks, but it would help if you put a town, or state, or area. most of us are not going to google earth before we attempt to answer your questions.

there are 1000's of members with 100's of questions. we all do our best to help when we can. much of beekeeping is local. that's why knowing at least a general area is important.
