I got a call today about a guy who has bees in his beloved tree in the back yard the main entrance is about 6 feet off the ground.  He has been trying to get them out but the only beek answer he has gotten has been to cut the tree down.  He will NOT chop it down and is to the point of exterminating them.  He called me as a last beek effort and I told him there IS another way called a Trap Out!!   He is all excited as he didn't want to kill the bees and the tree is not moving.  So my question is I can do this trap out all I need to do is silicone up all the (extra) exits in the tree and do the trap out right?

If so I have another question I have no more boxes but about 10 cardboard nucs.   Could I use the nucs and then sell the nucs when the queen mates and starts laying?  I am out of other ideas and I don't want the bees to die.  If I can use cardboard nucs then I have 3 more trap outs I can do the same way only in houses.

Thanks in advanced.

To bee or not to bee that is the question I wake up to answer that every morning...

Just be sure the night time temps do not dip down too cool to kill off the frame of brood you put into the nuc.

You must also have drones flying for them to mate with the virgin queen that is going to be produced from the frame of brood you put into the nuc, or you could buy a mated queen.

Yah im planning on doing this in late april when it stays above 40 at night for the most part thats what I was wondering about with the wax covered cardboard nucs....

If you are worried about them holding up in the weather, I can not answer that since I have never used them. I would think the rain would be the most destructive to them. Might try laying a piece of tin or even a 10 frame telescopic cover to help protect it from the elements.

The bees will come into the nuc with no problem, just have to keep an eye on them so they don't get to crowded.

Good luck with them.

It would be much better to sell a nuc, keeping one frame of eggs + 4 drawn frames, then use the remainder of the hive for the trap out. Get the tree plugged and the cone ready. Install the trap the day you sell the nuc.
