Hi everyone! My 13 year old son Jacob and I just started our first hives this year. Actually, he does all of the work because I can't lift any of the frames or anything due to RA. Jacob is doing a great job while I take video and pics. We decided to make beekeeping available to 4H members in our community but so far no one has expressed an interest. They are too afraid. Jacob would like to get an observation hive to educate folks about honey bees.

We are a 4H family :) We raise show chickens, market birds and heritage turkeys. My oldest daughter Rachel got 2 lambs this spring too. No cats and dogs - go figure.

Why Hello there,   Not sure how far ya are but I am in south east michigan, actually the thumb area.  second year with bees and seems to still be contagious.  I started last year with one hive and now have seven.  Hoping to go to ten this year and maybe twenty next year?  Will see how they overwinter.

Hello and Welcome!

I'm sure you'll find this forum to be a good source of information to learn more about bees and beekeeping.  If you're just starting out, be sure to check out the tutorials on the main Beemaster page.

I also recommend getting involved with a local beekeeping club. Clubs are great places to find mentors and get connected to nearby beekeepers:

Hello,

I am teaching beekeeping to the 4H club of Placerville this season.  I find the kids to be so receptive and unafraid of the bees.  This has been the norm in my experience with young kids.  They just love the bees.

I think your son has a great idea with that observation hive. Good luck with your new adventure.

Sincerely
Annette
