I have a hive in which the bees have declared war on the drones. Isn't it a bit early for this this? How do the bees kill the drones. If they sting them, do they die too?

I don't know why they are killing your drones but I do know that they won't die when stinging another insect just when they sting an animal or human.

Dude, I had tons of drones last month, now....NONE!!  We are in a dearth, a very dry, naughty dearth that has killed back everyone's gardens.  I believe a dearth is the reason for our drone cut backs.  I may even have to feed my nucs right now which I did not have to do last year.
