A tale of two nucs. Both were started April 29, with 1 frame eggs/brood, 2 frames food, and 2 empty frames, plus an extra frame of bees shook in. Nuc "A" had several queen cells, while Nuc "B" had just eggs. After Nuc "A"s queen was mated and laying, I moved it into a deep. Nuc "B"s queen disappeared so I added another frame of eggs. By the time Nuc "B" had a laying queen, Nuc "A" was into a second deep! I took Nuc "A" to a friend's yard which is backed by a woods of wild cherry, and both neighbors grow apples, pears, blueberries and raspberries. I put a med. super on it. Last week I checked on it. Both deeps were filled, and the med. super was totally packed with honey! I put another super on it to give them more room. Meanwhile, Nuc "B" filled the first deep and started drawing out a medium super. I just sold Nuc "B", and I am going to start a nuc from Nuc "A". I am definitely going to be putting more hives on my friend's property. I just hope the fall flow is as good as the spring flow! Needless to say, I am totally amazed at the growth of Nuc "A"! I had no expectations at all of collecting any honey from it, let alone a completely full super.
