Looking at purchasing equipment in the USA to be sent to Australia

Hi Everybody,

Greetings from "Down Under"

I was wondering if any of the suppliers, Dadant, Brushy Mountain, Mann lake etc have members on here that i would be able to email to ask about purchasing items from them and shipping them to Australia? Also, if there are any other suppliers that you could suggest other than those listed above i'd be more than happy for your suggestions - i'm not wanting a huge amount of stuff but prices in the USA are much more reasonable on some items than here in Australia - dependent obviously on the freight costs

Smokers, protective gear, excluders, hive tools, queen raising kits etc - i'm not looking for woodware or foundation etc although i could be interested in plastic foundation if it's cheaper than i can get it for here ($1.28AUS per sheet for full depth)

You are not going to save anything. Exchange rates are about even dollar for dollar. Plastic foundation at a dollar here, but the shipping will kill you, even in a bulk container worth.

I agree on frames but on many items it might be worth it. Even though the currencies are at parity, prices in Australia are much higher, expressed in either currency. Bulk shipping of light manufactured goods (like smokers) might be worthwhile.

OzBuzz, it might be easier if you made a group buy so it would be economical for the supplier to arrange shipping. But you can just email the suppliers directly and ask what they are able to do. If you buy a lot and send it by ship it would be cheaper.

Absolutely, for example here in Australia a smoker that could be bought for $35 in the USA retails for $90!

OK, so the prices on a few items is a lot more, and on most items just a little tad bit more, and on nothing I saw cheaper tan what we have here. I guess the only thing I can say is God bless American and free enterprise and capitalism to encourage competition to keep prices low. And Bindaree sells Maxant equipment.

You are forgetting about import tariffs. Somebody has to pay the duty.

Well you COULD say that. :roll: Or you could say that Australia is also an intensely competitive capitalist economy. And in that case, the high prices would be due to a temporary imbalance in exchange rates. It's the Aussie dollar that is too high relative to other currencies. There is lots of currency speculation on the $a because of Chinese interest in mineral extraction in Australia. In the long run, if Australia makes lots of money from mining activities, that will filter down to the Australian standard of living and prices will drop. Right now everything costs more in parity dollar terms than in the US. a restaurant meal is about twice what a comparable meal would be in the US.

The world is definitely getting smaller !

I live i Sweden and recently ordered some beekeeping equipment from England. OK it all in the European union.

But if you order over the WWW net , use a credit card that has fraud insurance , it doesn't make any difference where you live.

It all comes to the post office or your door in boxes. The only difference is if you can go into a shop and look and feel before you buy.
