I took a good hit with winter loses this winter and when I am able to get around to making nucs I have to figure out a way of boosting there numbers without taking all the brood from other colonies.

I know you can equalize colonies by switching there locations with one another.  However if you take a three frame colony and switch it with a colony two deeps strong do you need to worry about the large number of older field bees rejecting the queen when they return?   Would some of the field bees revert to taking care of brood?  Is there a better way?

Can you take a nuc and combine with newspaper over a queen excluder or will the strong colony below kill the queen above?
