Do snakes like bee hives??    I hate snakes.  Today I was scared to death and this was not the first time.

Mshel

good question.  I hate snakes too. :(

One time, when I was a teenager, I was helping a beekeeping friend of mine work in his bee yard.  We picked up this one dead out hive that he had and put it in the truck to take home to clean up.  Once we set it on the tail gate, he tried to slide the hive forward by pushing on the second super up.  This caused the bottom and second super to separate.  Once this happened a five foot long black snake slithered up and out of the hive.
Now you have to know my beekeeping friend to really understand his reaction.  He always said he hates four kinds of snakes, "live snakes, dead snakes, big snakes and  little snakes".
Once that snake slid up to his arm he screamed like a six year old school girl and took off running.  :-D. I swear it was so funny.  BTW, I am not afraid of snakes in the least so needless to say I was laughing my butt off at him.

So, to answer your question.  They will hang out in a hive that has died out.  I am not for sure if they will in a hive thats living though.

Snakes do not like bees, but they do like mice. They will go under hives or in deadouts if there has been mice in or around them recently. They are good to have around, unless you like mice in your honey.

I live in rattlesnake country and that is one reason I only have 1/4" wide entrances and always tip a hive toward me and look under.  One place I have permission to have bees I euphamistically call rattlesnake ridge.

Two harmless snakes being tormented by an idiot. Both in deadouts, one of which was infested with mice. Maybe the second one, too. He didn't open it up all that well.

Kind of clarifies my last post, doesn't it?

Looks like the deadouts had been that way for awhile.  I think the snake was smart to move in there!  Who can beat "dining in"?

The larger of the two looked like some type of rat snake, the second a king snake. Both beneficial and harmless snakes. Really can't think of any snake that isn't beneficial to some degree, even the poisonous ones take care of their share of mice and other rodents.

I have a Florida kingsnake "Claude" and am likely bringing home my new one a blood python. Finally found a blood I like and one that's very tame. Been looking for a blood for about two yrs now, I'm stoked!

Your right JP, the first one looks like a red rat snake and the second looks like a king snake.  The only problem would be if the second one was a coral snake (highly poisonous).  Can't see the color too well on the second.  Red followed by thin white or yellow rings could be a coral snake.  Different variations out there.  Red followed by black could be a king snake.

Gray Rat and Chain King. Both very beneficial snakes to have around.

Just remember when you are about to off a snake - remember how much we flame ignorant people for killing poor innocent bee swarms.  This is no different.  It's o.k. to be afraid of them, we all have our issues.  A very long stick and a gentle poke or two will send that snake on it's way.

Found a copperhead around my hives once didn't kill it though dogs took care of that.  No doubt it was a copperhead had 2 dogs get bit and swell up real nice.  Would rather have black snakes around my hives then anything not posionus and they do a pretty good job to keeping out the mice.

I'm with you iddee - i don't know who it was that made that video and if it's the person that posted them i apologise - but they deserved to be bitten! the prodding and poking that went on to those snakes is just stupidity and completely unnecessary - once the thing slithered out of the hive and started making a run for it then that should be where it was left alone and the way the box was thrown about to get it out was stupid

I agree with Iddee. It looks like a grey rat snake, and a common or chain king. Beautiful snakes. I hope that idiot didn't harm them after he tormented them. I watched one or two of his vids on youtube a while ago. Didn't like him at all then and don't like him now either!
