Nice to see my part of the country isn't the only one with a reserve of idiots.  I bet they had a nice expensive and stupid weenie roast.
Take me to the land of milk and honey!!!

if i had to guess, i'd guess that the hives were to broken to put back on the truck and they had to clear the road.

Just a beek trying to get ready for winter.

Lets see....

Driver in the hospital.

Possibly no other beekeepers available.

So what do you folks expect......a call to the local bee club? A call for beekeepers to come running from the surrounding area? You expect the road to remain closed for what reason? So someone could go through 200 hives putting them back together frame by frame?

The bee truck was hit by another driver. It is normal for an entire load to be written off in such circumstances. Insurance will pay for the entire loss. As the owner of the hives, it would be better to submit a full claim for the load as compared to spending days if not weeks determining what the final cost could be in lost comb, bees, queens, etc. How many hours do you expect the beekeeper to spend trying to save all the comb, looking for queens, repairing equipment, etc?

Do you expect the beekeeper to send a crew from his location that could be a days drive away? Or do you think the highway patrol should allow a bunch of local beekeeper to conduct "business" along the highway trying to save some bees, with liability, ownership, and other aspects coming into play allowing a bunch of bee hero's to come to the rescure. Would they be working for the bee company saving bees, or would they be benefitting from all this?

I can see a call into the highway patrolman on duty a day later from the Governor asking why the road is still closed. And the reply being "Well, were trying to save the bees. The owner is sending a crew that will be here tomorrow, and right now we have a couple gentlemen from the bee local club but we had to wait for the owner to give written permission, and a insurance liability release had to be gained. We are hoping to open the highway sometime tomorrow if all goes smoothly. I know it's an inconvenience, but we got to save these bees. And just think how much money we will save the insurance company."

What were they thing......they were thinking correctly. Was anyone idiots?....I don't think so.

Its a 'safety' thing (safe for whom?) This actually happens more than we hear about, its why the big operators hire truck drivers (who are not beeks) to haul bees around the Country.

These acts (and many others) simply confirm my belief that humanity (and its never ending hunger for more of everything) is the biggest threat to life on the planet and while pursuing profit, remains its most destructive force.

What's the plan (for next time), man?  (get more insurance :-\)

Wow....all that from a human error mistake and a crash from a truck.

Next time? Next time for what? That a human being makes a mistake?

I guess we are all doomed. We should just save the earth by killing ourselves.

Ok....who is first?  :-D

Humanity; the "GREAT(est) MISTAKE!"  Doomed?  Probably.

Who's first? Isn't that why we have wars? :-D

Wow...we cry over the bees and then turn around and spray the wasps, stomp the ants, poison the termites!!

Hello...they're all bugs! (yeah, I know, not technically)  As sad as it is that a trailer load of bees gets destroyed, they're still livestock.  Would it have been any different if it had been cows, chickens, or pigs?  Or would they just have been going to die anyway?  Whereas some get their vision clouded that bees are just a business asset, we also over-revere our little boxes of tiny stinging angels.

Bjorn is right on!  Sometimes extreme situations warrant extreme measures.

Hmmm, would there be accidents/mistakes without humans? ;)  Why burn?  Quickest return?

how do you get from a road accident to war.  really??

if you believe in evolution, then you think that nature made a mistake in our development?  if you believe in creation, you think god made a mistake?  i'll guess you believe in evolution and i wonder, if the dominant creature was something with fur and fangs that was decimating the population of warm blooded animals and clawing the bark off the trees, would that bother you? or would you say...that's nature....

QuoteHmmm, would there be accidents/mistakes without humans?   Why burn?  Quickest return?

no.  lets get rid of the humans because it's way more important to have a pristine world for the cockroaches.  they'll be so please and build statues in our memory.
why burn? has been answered.

perhaps the humans we should wonder about are those so quick to think the worst of their fellow man?  i have been told that people assign motive to others actions, the thoughts that they themselves own.....

But this is predicated upon the person's becoming in every facet an American, and nothing but an American...There can be no divided allegiance here. Any man who says he is an American, but something else also, isn't an American at all. We have room for but one flag, the American flag...We have room for but one language here, and that is the English language...And we have room for but one sole loyalty and that is a loyalty to the American people."

i'm just sorry to hear a load of potential pollinators were destroyed. Yes it would have nice to capture them. I suppose the area will be full of feral hives and that may be a good thing too. Still you hate to heat it. Both from a living creature snd a monetary/crop reduction point of view.

When a tree falls down in a forest and a human isn't around to blame, does the beehive in that tree still die on impact?

Why burn?  Go back and review Bjorn's post, I think he did a great job of explainint it.
