How is the heat.  I went out in the bee yard yesterday and I have never un-enjoyed beekeeping more. I had planed on trying to play with maybe getting the bees to draw some queen cells on some frames for splits. I saw eggs and left and darn if I didn't have a shb attack on the nuc combine I did. So I just took the frames and washed them with the water hose and left them in a bucket out back. So for now on no bee work before 6 pm its just to darn hot.

I spent the rest of the day inside and even started my own war with the sun coating my windows in aluminum foil I know it looks bad but darn it that stuff keeps the sun out. That with the fact that my air conditioner didn't turn off all day yesterday I have to do something to just keep it cool in the house.

How the heat hitting yall and don't chime in if you live in what I would call a cool area yesterday here it was 99 with air you had to chew to suck in. This post if for Schawee, JP and all the rest of us living on the edge of hells rim lol.

All joking aside be safe its to darn hot right now.

Any tricks on staying cool will be appreciated I am thinking of soaking the suit down in ice water from now on.

come to oregon.  i am considering turning on the heat today.  will probably do it sometime this week.  nothing grows.  the honey yield will probably not be good as rain is coming right in the middle of the blackberry bloom.

We were 92F here in Michigan yesterday, but having lived in Memphis, I know what you mean by HOT.  I couldn't take the heat anymore and moved north.

If aluminum foil is helping to keep your house cool, I wonder what it might do on a bee hive?

Oh, by the way, we're 72F right now  :-D

I get up early and work the hives.  It' s cooler at 6AM than it is at 6PM.   :-D
And if the heat is seriously ruining your beekeeping fun, get an ultrabreeze suit.  They really are a lot cooler.

Heat index of 100 today.   So much for me making splits this afternoon after work or hoeing under some weeds in the garden.   May have to just mow the weeds between the rows soon.

It was a nice balmy 97° F in the shade yesterday.  I don't know why the heat is so much more "hot" here.  Still it's nice.  The hives are in full sun, with judicious ventilation they are working well.  Two of them are sitting over bare concrete, and I see the occasional bee in the water source.  My only problem is SHB.

They just put on a heat advisory for here tomorrow.  High 98, heat index 105.  I went out this afternoon and the heat was like a weight pressing down.

But I prefer the muggy heat lately, because at least we are getting thunderstorms every few days.  Before this latest wave, it was mid-eighties and dry as a bone for weeks.

I'm hoping to begin beekeeping spring of 2012.  I'm glad I didn't start this year.  We've only had 5.5 inches of rain from Nov 1 thru July 11th and we've had almost 30 consecutive days of 100F+ temps..with max of 109.2 on July 9th..no end in sight...we need your prayers

Right now I'm sick to my stomach.  Then, Schawee, you talk about wearing a bunch of clothes.  I'm starting to get dizzy.

I've been out there wearing a pair of shorts and a smile...

We were in the 100's last week, but it finally cooled off this week to the high 80's. We often get days on end of 105-107. I stay inside and try not to go outside much. We do not have air conditioning, but have a swamp cooler. It works ok as long as the humidity is very low. On high temperature days, it can be very hot inside the house.

Just funnin', it is really hot in Tn in the summer, been there, done that. Actually, a lot of the country has been hotter that Fl this year. We've had a fairly mild summer with avg temps in the low 90s. We had about a week of 100° temps in June but since then it's been a little more tolerable. I really feel sorry for the folks up north that aren't used to the heat. I bet it's rough on them.

I know what you mean by the heat.  We have been breaking records here.  We have had a few days that topped 110.  The other day the news said it was 111, but 3 different people plus us had thermometers in the shade that read 115-118!!!  It's crazy.

I only work the hives if I get out there around 730.  Light enough to see eggs and 80 is warm in a suit, but not unbearable.

Stay cool, all.
