So I baught the property to the north of my house, tore down the house, and put up a privacy fence. The two hives I have at my house are 100 feet from the new neighbors. She just came over and said she and her child were stung, there were 5 bees flying around their house and they wont leave. She told my wife we needed to control the bees and make sure they dont go in their yard.  I have had my hives here for 6 years with no complaints, and 5 hives at that.

The kicker of the story is that they cant call the police because I am a police officer and the police wont do anything to another cop. Well to keep things good I called myself in and talked to the code enforcement officer. He said "Well Shawn you know the city ordiance is." I said yes I can have 4 hives per property. I told him the neighbor does not want to call because they think nothing will happen. They are right there because I only have two hives, keep plenty of water out for them, 4 different water buckets throughout the yard, and even feed during the hard times.

I decided to be a good neighbor I am moving the hives out with the rest of mine in the country. A shame that after 6 years and all sorts of different neighbors I get one that just wants to complain. I guess when they stay up late at night playing their loud music, fighting, and throwing their beer cans in my yard I will have to start calling them in to the police.

wait until they get stung again....if they ever were

She said both were stung but the funny thing is I was outside when it supposly happened. I did not here anyone scream or say anything that would indicate they got stung. If a small child gets stung I think you are going to hear them cry. Oh well I guess I just needed to vent since I dont think it would be a good idea to go talk to them right now.

Did she show you her sting site when she came over to complain?

After you move your hives put two empty hives in there place. Than when she gets stung again you can show her they weren't yours.

I really doubt it was a honey bee that did the stinging.

She did show the sting area to my wife. I was wondering if she got stung by a bee or a wasp. If she and her kids got stung at the same time I was thinking wasp.

Im not sure how she saw the hives but Im guessing while I was on vacation my fence blew down and the husband put it back up, noticed it was uneven and there was different type of screws in the brackets.

I love the idea of the empty hive and Im going to do that. I will watch the hive and make sure no swarm moves in because I have had that happen, I posted on it a couple years ago. In my line of work I have had run ins with both the husband and wife and they are not part of my fan club

I would put empty hives where they were and move those.  Then when she complains again, take her over and show her the empty boxes....

Well i know if i lived in town i would not have bees i have had bees now going into my third year and i know some times i can sit in front of my 3 hives and read and sip tea and what not  but at diffrent times of the year they get bitchy and will sting I'm lucky i have 12 acres and ya can't see my hives and my neighbors don't  have problems with my bees but i don't live in town. The way i see it  if ya have a place to put them away from town your better off and better for your neighbors that can't win with you being a cop. respect should be  first  and living in town you have to put people first. 100 feet is not enough to have bees  and neighbors.
Just my two cents :)

Ok, I got one hive moved this morning but the second hive was to heavy for my daughter to help me lift. Im going to open it up today and see why there is so much honey still inside. I posted a thread last year or two years ago about the hive smelling. Could the honey be bad in the lower deeps. I have two deeps and one medium as their brood chambers. Im thinking the bottom deep is completly full and the top deep is half.

So my question is do I take off the bottom deep and put a new deep on? How do I get the medium off. The medium is full of brood but I want to go back to only having two deeps for brood. I thought of queen excluder between deep and medium after I use some bee-b-gone. I think the medium full of brood could be another answer why the bees are not down in the bottom deep.

Split the heavy hive! You now have three!

As a 'cop' did you ask the most important question?

What 'proof' did your neighbor present that any stinging they 'may' have suffered came from 'your' bees or even honeybees?

Where's the bee?  Where's the stinger?  A lone honeybee is seldomly aggressive, defensive yes, but stinging just to sting when not protecting the nest..........that's just BS.

I also like the 'empty' hive solution.  In fact I keep at least one around (to catch swarms) all year, one right near the front door.

(I 'used' to be a 'federal' cop  ;) )

As for "why people cant get along" well...........that's mostly due to an individuals inability/unwillingness to accept or entertain anothers viewpoint or perspective of the world without digressing to name calling, ridicule or worse.

A lack of personal maturity/integrity if you will.  The world is full of this sort and as a cop you likely experience it on a daily basis......Right?

GOOD LUCK and keep your head down  :)
