Did my third live removal today. Will probably be the last one I do for free. Did one Saturday, an old colony, under a window, been there for five yrs. The comb was black in spots. Got the queen, yeah! My first removal, I didn't catch her, but I think I'm getting better. I filled 5 five gallon buckets on my first removal, Saturday, one & a half. Today, One & a half. This removal was tough, I was very tired & worn out & 99.9% done & no queen! But... I was finishing up, investigating a small area with a cluster of perhaps 2-300 bees & I was struggling cause this area was tucked behind a roof rafter & I couldn't get any tools in there, so I displaced them with my fingers. The queen comes crawling out, what great relief! Then she flies out of my hand when trying to place her in the queen cage! What disapoinment! Then when I'm picking up, my nephew yells, I think I see her! & there she was, 5' from where I had caught her, Amen.

If she flies she tends to orient on you.  If you stay put for ten minutes or so she'll usually land right in front of you.  I've had them land on my veil.

Well, was that your last "free" removal? ;)  JP, I happened to stumble upon this one and thought I'd bump it up (since it's kind of slow around here anyhow).  Knowing somewhat where you're at now with your bee removals this post of yours made me smile.  :)

And...good info on the queen orientation from MB, too.

Enjoy the game,  ;)

American blood spilled to protect the freedom and peace of people all over the world.  320,000 USA casualties in WWI, 1,076,000 USA casualties in WWII, 128,000 USA casualties in the Korean War, 211,000 casualties in the Vietnam "conflict", 57,000 USA casualties in "War on Terror".  Benghazi, Libya, 13 USA casualties. Nice revival, I've been wondering how long you, JP, have been doing hive removals. Knew it had to be a few years due to the quality of your videos.

And a very good example it is too!

After seeing the date of that post and seeing the more recent posts of JP and how he is doing, maybe there is light at the end of the tunnel (and not just the oncoming train).

I always look forward to learning from the old posts as well as the more recent.

My nephew doesn't help me with the bees much these days. He doesn't like getting stung, not even a little bit.  :-D

Didn't even look at the date when I responded, usually I do!  That means it wasn't his third hive removal "of the day" which is how I took it originally, but his actual third hive removal.

So, JP, have you kept a running count?  How many, do you think, at this point?

JP

Alicia, I don't have an exact count at the moment but more than a thousand for certain. 2008 alone I removed over 200. I do get a break down here though, Scott and Peggy get a much shorter break. They've probably removed twice as many as I have.
