I received my hive and related items from Dadant on Friday.
I promptly painted my hive and set it up in full sun facing East.
Now I'm just waiting to hear back about when the bees will be available.
I'm super psyched!

Nice looking hive, and good luck with your bees Terri.

Full sun facing east works for me and I hope that it works for you. Larry

I hope so too, Larry.
Thanks to this site, I was able to do a lot of research about placement. Looks like the girls will get the early morning sun and have sun most of the day.
That's supposed to help keep the hive beetles away, right? I don't even have my bees yet and I'm already stressing over hive beetles, mites and FB.
I ordered the screened bottom for this hive. It came with the solid bottom that I will eventually cut out and put screen in for my next hive. Thinking ahead! :-D

Yes on keeping the hive beetles under control. I still get a few, but I kill them when I see them while doing my hive inspections. I have screened bottom boards on my hives and I also think that they help with the beetles as they let all of the junk drop out of the hive and it doesn't build up on the bottom board.

A beekeeper from Jacksonville used to keep bees on my property before I started keeping bees, and he lost many hives from beetles. He had solid bottom boards and a lot of junk would build up there and that's where the beetles would lay their eggs.

I have never lost a hive to the hive beetle. Wax moths! That's my problem!

Very nice looking hive. I hope your new tenants appreciate their new crib. ;)
