Has anyone just used the lids without the end cleats? I was thinking about just making just the lid without cleats.

That's all I use, just a peice of plywood with a feeder hole in it. No cleats.

In the summer, just about anything will work.  I've even used OSB and no cleats.  The stuff expands by about 30% when it gets wet, but it holds together and keeps on going in a pinch.  It doesn't warp like plywood.

I should have clarified, I use MDO form board, not regular plywood. I've had no problems with warping.

I use plain plywood tops without cleats but they are only for feeding.
