Hello Everyone,

I have been interested in Beekeeping for awhile and finally bought my first house last year. I live in a typical American suburban neighborhood so any advice from keepers with a similar environment is welcome. I am currently looking at plans to build a top bar hive to setup in my backyard. I really have no idea what I am doing yet and plan buying a book this weekend so any advice someone can give me will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

RC

Welcome to the forum, Fenrir.  There is lots here that can help.  You may also want to find a local bee club.  There are pros and cons to most hive designs.  I started with a TBH that I built, then I got some Lang's.  I am thinking about making a long hive, using Lang frames.  You can read and study, then decide what you want to start with.  Good luck, beek is addictive.

Welcome, Fenrir! Yes, find your local Bee Club(s); start with the SC Beekeepers Assoc page.

What book(s) are you planning to start with? Bee Clubs sometimes buy in bulk, so you can get through them cheaper.

Hi and welcome. Go to your local library. You'd be amazed at the rescources that are there for free. Some really good books out there to be read. Like you, I am a newbie and you'll find this site a REALLY good place for info and laughs. :-D

Thanks for the warm welcome guys! I picked up the The Beekeepers Bible today on sale since SC was having a no sales tax holiday. So I will start to read up on that in the next couple of weeks. I missed this months Beekeeper meeting for my area by one day so I will be stopping by next month. Also found a local beekeeper 5 miles from me that has over 200 hives so I have plans to visit with him as well.
