What to plant??

I have about 1 acre of open patch behind my house....Looking for something to plant that bees would love and that is pretty, any suggestions? I was thinking about some cosmos and clover.

See if sanfoin will grow.  Throw in cleome,  beautiful and reseeds and the bees love it.

I'll be planting yellow and white sweet clover, along with fireweed and goldenrod on my 2 acres

do you want to keep planting?  do you want to keep it an open field?
if you aren't opposed to trees there are several varieties that will flower within a few years that the bees like.  you could mix vitex, empress trees and bee bee trees and have blooms that the bees will work over several months and if you space them out like an orchard you could plant clover, buckwheat, sunflowers etc. between rows and have flowers low and high.  you could also mix in some butterfly bushes now that i think about it.

While planting all these flowers and trees, you can throw in a few popcorn and sourwood trees also.  Good luck to you and your bees.

If you can find a native wildflower mix for your area it will attract lots of pollinators along with hummingbirds and butterflys.

Here in Kentucky, I would plant buckwheat let to go to seed,  disc it under and let it go again until the fall then plant a clover.  Not sure if you have readily available equipment, if not, then a spring clover planting and regular cutting may be your best option.

i've got some ladino, crimson and ball clover planted around my place.  the ball is supposed to have the highest re-seeding rate but it costs a fortune.  i think they'll all re-seed if you keep them mowed, though.

Does anyone have trouble with clover honey being cloudy? I thought about a mixture of white clover, cosmos and the cleome. I looked at the zone for sainfoin but I'm not sure it will grow this far south.
I would like to keep it an open patch (I would have more room but hubby lets someone farm that part of it) I wouldn't mind a bee tree or two in the yard.  With my luck, I can throw out a bunch of seed and the mice will tote them off! LOL

Jay- I've never heard of a sunflower tree but you can throw a cutting or two my way if you want to  :-D

I have hives on 25 acres of Ladino clover and my honey last year was clear and had an excellent flavor.. I am planting another 20 acres for another bee yard this year.

dutch white & ladino clover. if you can have taller growth- sweet yellow clover. last year the bees were non stop on my Russian sage, cosmos, thyme, & oregano & all of those bloom all summer. they'll work daturas ( moonflowers ) after dark. in the spring there were as many as 10 bees per flower on my Asian poppies. I can hear my linden tree buzzing from 25' away when it blooms it is so full of bees. they also like potenilla
( cinquefoil ) shrubs & they bloom all summer.

Ball or Arrow Leaf Clover is good.
I have 3 registered bee yards that are on around 400 acres of clover.
My honey was fairly dark last year.
I also plant a strip of Buck Wheat about 40ft wide by 300 ft long.
Here at the house I have 5 acres of ball clover and a strip of Buckwheat.
I also have 4 Korean Evodia (Bee Bee) Trees.

I was recommended this plant a President of a State Bee Keeper assoc.

Vitex or Blue Chaste plant also known as the woman plant. Its supposed to be great during darth.

I went wild planting peach tree's ,Apple trees . My Bee Yard aside from that is full Hydranga's and flowers.
