A week ago I had a swarm move into a new cedar 5 frame nuc trap. When I opened it up it was very small. Looked like it was too small to survive in a regular hive.
I moved it into my observation hive. I did this because I have had several queens overwinter with very small number of bees survive and then build up and swarm in the spring.
When I put it in the OH, half of the bees were on a frame at the top and the other half stayed onset the bottom empty deep frames. After a few days, most of the bees were on the bottom. I never did find the queen during the install.
We never did know if we had a queen. I did not check on this hive for the last 4 days. Below is a picture of what it looked today. The bees started building wax below the bottom frame and then started building up.
That is right. They are building comb from the bottom of the bottom frame. I turn the OH around and on that side I can see more of the comb and there are eggs in the bottom of every cell.
I have not seen the queen yet but now I know she is in there.
By the way, I am not feeding this hive. There are several good types of plants in bloom and that are living off the land.
