I intend to make my first attempt at wintering nucs (here in Fort Wayne, IN) and have settled on trying Michael Palmer's double nuc set-up.  My question to you guys is how to set up the entrances in the split deep hive body.  I was considering placing the box on a regular bottom board with the divider extended to it seperating the two hive chambers.  I thought about using a regular entrance reducer with the small opening for the left side hive and cutting a similar sized opening in the bottom board on the right side of the hive.  Too complicated?  Should I just drill holes in opposing sides of the box and close of the entrance reducer opening entirely?

Any other advice you guys have that you think may help me successfully get these July start nucs through the winter would also be greatly appreciated.  Thanks to you all!

I use a piece of 3/4 plywood and put 3/8" plywood spacer around the edge and middle divider.   Leave a 3" opening on opposite corners.

This is an old picture,  I now put a strip across for the divider as well.  But you get the idea.
