Bee-Haven

I was just wondering if there are any other bee keepers in Virginia. I am looking for a type of mentor as I am beginning my first hive this coming April. I already have most of my equipment, and have read multiple books and viewed countless videos, but it is not the same as having someone help you with the small details during the housing and following inspections.

I have been viewing some of the beekeeping associations around me but they don't seem very updated, and most of them expect their members to show up to meetings (go figure). Seriously though I have serious social problems, so going to meetings is difficult for me. Luckily bees don't judge social awkwardness. If anyone is in the Mathews/Gloucester area, or somewhere close by, and would like to help an upcoming bee keeper; I would really appreciate it.

Talking to people will often come with more stings than talking to bees.

I would at least try to go to a local meeting.  It is the one place you are most likely to find a beekeeper who is local to you.

Most of the people in associations just want to help new beekeepers succeed.  The first couple of years are hard, so I think you are on the right track trying to find a mentor.

There are some beekeepers down your way. I see them on this and other beekeeping forums. Maybe not around the corner, but alot closer than I. I didnt go to any meetings, and my only mentor has been these and other pages like these. There is a wealth of information, but a seasoned beekeeper in person would seem to me to be priceless getting started. Keep looking, you will find someone. Until then, keep reading and asking questions, the people here are very nice and possess a vast wealth of knowledge. Good Luck. G

Newbie here just getting started in Louisa County. And I know of two others in Va. just starting out with bees this spring, too.

+1 what biggraham610 said - lots of help on these boards.

I don't know if organic will be your style, but if you want all day immersion in bees with folks that have made it work, consider coming to the MAOHBC in Richmond, March 28th. You can get over the awkward hump - do it for your girls!
