Hello from the southern Caribbean

I am new to the board. I am a newcomer to beekeeping, sort of.

I dont have my own bees yet, I still have to convince my family that its ok to have bees in our backyard, but I get to help out with 2 hives.
Both hives are owned by brand new beekeepers.
At the first place they have a hive that is one year old that started from a nuc.
At the other location they have a new hive that was given to them.

I have been doing alot of reading and watching videos over the past few weeks.
I am especially keen on find out the risks involved in a newbee beekeeper keeping bees in a residential area. From the videos I have seen it looks like there are quite a few people who keep bees near their homes.

I got the address of this forum from a youtube video.
I am looking forward to learning a lot more from the folks on this board.

My hives in my home yard are about 20 feet from the back door.....typical flight path as the girls leave the hive takes them up and over the house at about 10 or so feet... so if we are sitting outside on the back patio and look up there is a steady stream of traffic over our heads and we are completely ignored :-)

I am up here in Key Largo FL so I guess you could say I am from the "northern carribbean" ;-)

Welcome.  I have seven hives in my backyard and another 9 in my side yard.  Unless you are standing within 20 feet of the front of them, you wouldn't even know that the bees are there.

Welcome to the forum, What part of the caribbean are you from. I lived in Trinidad for about 16 months. 4 months in Guyana, and 4 months in Barbados.

Welcome from the cold north. Bbbrrrrr lol I bet you get delicious honey from all those beautiful flowers on the islands. My one hive that I have is about 40 yards from my house (although we own several hundred acres! lol wanted them close hehe). Sometimes they come to the door or fly around the roof but they've never been bothersome. I've read many people say their neighbors, most of the time, never even know about the bees in the backyard if the hives are not obvious. The bees liking the neighbor's water source better than their own, seems to be the main concern from what I've learned. lol Anyway, Welcome!

I have had as many as 17 hives in my back yard, real close to the pool. Had them for 5 years with 2 granddaughters in the pool all summer long. Only the youngest ever got stung once and that was just last year when she darn near stuck her face in my Observation Hive while I was working on it.
If you have africianized bees, do not try it.
