Thinking about shipping some queens this year.... how many nurse bees should i be putting in the cage with the queen just out of curiosity?

I put 4 to 5. Others may vary.

Depends on the cage.
- For JZBZ mini cage, I put 5.  If I lost count, the odd one probably got 7.
- For calif mini wood cage, I put 7.
- For old std big wood cage, I put 9.
When the lid goes back on, the bees will spend the next 3 days undoing most of what the beekeeper just did to them.

Just make sure if you are shipping out of state that you have a health certificate from your state.

The unsaid importance of the cage attendants are the purposes of them being in there.
- the queen needs grooming
- the queen needs to be feed water, carbohydrates, and jelly.
- she has to be kept from getting cold
- she has to be kept from getting hot
Viable sperm dies at high and low temperatures.  Thus a caged queen can come out good or bad. The attendant bees climate control the mini environment around her.  The more bees in the cage the better, within reason.

Orin, just want to say that is a beautiful pic: a lil fuzzy but looks like a manicured lawn, fenced in hives, huge tree, all GREEN, and the sun is in the pic.  Looks like a nice peaceful place where a person can relax.  All ya need is a lil lemonade or a cold beer as one may prefer.
I have been around bees a long time, since birth.  I am a hobbyist so my answers often reflect this fact.  I concentrate on genetics, raise my own queens by wet graft, nicot, with natural or II breeding.  I do not sell queens, I will give queens  for free but no shipping.
