Hello All,

I?m really interested in what you thought about this film?  I have observations but I don?t want to prejudice any of your responses, for or against, so I?m holding them in reserve. What did you think of it?  I?m writing to the well known and highly regarded filmmaker, Ken Kimmelman, and I?d like to include some of your opinions and views. Thanks in advance.

Hi 2Sox,
Seeb started a topic a couple years ago mentioning this film. She stated she was going to see this. She never reported back from there. The only real response was a report from Sal.
Sal reported, "see it". He said it was shown at his local bee club and some of the members walked out early; Why? I do not know nor do I have 'a clue' as I did not see the movie. Perhaps others here have since watched it?

Maybe Sal will provide some information representing his bee club, and their thoughts on this?

2Sox since you did watch it, I am now curious as to what 'you' thought of this movie? Especially since you intend to write the filmmaker....  It must have been thought provoking in some respect....

Thanks,

Phillip

I saw it a couple of months ago. I?m in the process of writing a critique - or course not as a filmmaker, or any sort of authority on film making. Just as a beekeeper. As to beekeeping it was terribly flawed and contrived. I feel a great deal of this film was set up for effect. Anyone familiar with ?Reality TV? will know what I mean.

I?ll save the rest after I see the film again.  I want to be sure that I am being completely fair to this film and the purpose of the filmmaker, which I question in general.  The film won a bunch of awards and I feel I have to look at it again.

By the way, Mr. Kimmelman was not the maker of this film. However, segments of this film were shown when he discussed it in one of his film classes. I came late to that one and missed it. (Darn) I wrote to him that I had criticisms of the film and he replied that he was interested in my views. I am happily writing in reply.

By the way, you can view some of his work on YouTube. Just search his name.

Hi Folks,

I wrote this in another thread here:

My club showed this movie a few months ago. Sad, thought provoking  movie. See it.

A few of our members actually walked out early.

How can the "modern world" still be this savage?

How many accolades have been heaped upon these film-makers. Why did they NOT help the old lady? How much of the money was given to Hatidze?

They stole her privacy. They stole and sold her life story. They watched the mother deteriorate,... and die. They left Hatidze,... there,... alone in the end.

What's the rest of the story? ^They bought her a house...^ in a close town (read cheap money).

How many houses have they bought for themselves? What lifestyles have they?

Remember that Kevin Carter photo?

That's entertainment!

Sal

We humans engage in a lot of activity for entertainment. We pay money for this. Where is the "Trickle Down"? I was angry that the filmmakers did not intervene.

Having said that, I just now watched this interview. SPOILER! 2Sox. I hope seeing this interview doesn't colour your opinion Please click the link:

The makers of the film were NOT exploiting the circumstances for financial gain. That changes my opinions a bit. I'll have to think about this some more.

I strongly suggest you folks google that Kevin carter photo and read about what happened.

That is so American.  No good has come when we try to change other people.  The only justification for intervening is for another culture trying to change us.

Thanks for the link of the interview.  It was very informative and useful. But It didn?t really influence my opinion of the film one way or the other. Still lots of unanswered questions.  Editing of course is a selective process and documentaries by definition express the views of the creator. I suspect many scenes were ?set up? or not edited out to express those views.

I watched it.  Hard to say.  It's been a while, but I remember some things I thought were accurate and some things I thought were not at all.  Like any "reality" cinema, I always wonder what the film crew is doing.  It's hard to buy that people are on the brink of death and someone wouldn't step in to help...

I watched part of it on an airplane one time. It was on the inflight movies on the headrest tv. I switched over to Ironman for the 43rd time early on.
