What are some of the advantages of clipping queens?

For me it it is not losing the workforce if they attempt to swarm. Whilst I try to keep on top of swarming the bees do catch me out. Usually if you are around you find the queen on the ground and can then use her in your preferred apr?s swarm control. Sometimes she ends up under the floor with a retinue of bees and sometimes she is lost for ever.
In any of those circumstances you still retain your work force rather than seeing them flying off to distant horizons.

It also prevents many of the potentially expensive problems that can occur for your neighbours if a swarm of your bees ends up in their chimney/behind soffits/roof space etc.

Thank you Nigel! That is 'exactly' what I 'suspected' someones answer might be.  This is something I learned, 'though by accident' through an experience I had, past May. I posted of that experience yesterday on the Topic: "Assuming hive was being usurped" and is exactly why I started this topic as a spinoff topic.

Nigel, until your reply here, my experience was only a theory 'to me', as being a good way NOT TO LOOSE THE WORKFORCE. Which is a huge advantage in my opinion for reasons you explained.

Are there other advantages? Disadvantages?
Are there other beekeepers here which clip their queens for the same reason that Nigel has explained? Are there beekeepers here who clip their queens for other reasons as well?

Adding in my experience mentioned, my queen had lost one wing. When clipping; Is it the proper way to clip, (one wing), or both?

Thanks,

Phillip

Light-bulb comes on.
You know, never put much thought into this question. It was just something I never did. Thinking.

One big one is the queen can't fly off when you're doing an inspection... which has happened many times to me...
