The first Layens hive I built (4 feet long) has two slit entrances, half an inch by 12 inches long. That's 6 square inches.
This second hive uses stainless steel disc entrances (4.92 in size). The 1.75 inch entrance hole is 2.41 sq inches, so two of those together are almost 5 square inches. That's equivalent to a half an inch by 10 inch long entrance.
The circular entrances are a lot easier to close, for when I want to shift the brood nest to the other side on the hive.
