KTBH - New Pic of Observation Hive

I took a picture of the cluster today (5-4-07 5:00 PM) to see how they're doing. Just pull back the slide and look.
We looked at the other 17 colonies today, too. One dead, 14 in good shape and 2 needed feed.

Nice Looking hive Jon, I have been following your posts for the past year and a half on the top bar hive and I have to say your done really well with it for being as far north as you are. I was afraid they wouldn't winter being a single height and I didn't think they would move vertically to find food.
Keep us updated. I'm seeing one in my near future. ;)

Hi Steve,
I am still worried but they look like they will make it.
I have three more TBHs made and will post pictures as they get started.
I still have to learn how to manipulate them. With the windows, I have spent a lot of time looking, without disturbing them.
I made a honey press like James Satterfield uses for his Tanzanian TBHs; http://www2.gsu.edu/~biojdsx/main.htm.
I found a scissors jack at a yard sale for $1. Unfortunately, it has a galled screw so I don't use it the way I would normally. I use a couple of C-clamps to assist. I am hoping to find a good jack and see if it is really going to work. When I get it going properly, I'll post some information on it.

here's a box I built for a regular lang hive with a window in it
it worked pretty well and was easy to do

you need to use starter strips

As noted in the construction information, I used plain wood strips mounted in the top bars that sit proud by 1/4". The bees don't seem to mind a bit. As you can see in the photos of the construction project, they followed the strips.
