I heard that last weekend in two different parts of Texas that a man and a dog were both found dead. Bees were blamed for both instances but I can't find anything about either case.  I've only heard people talking about it, all upset about the "killer bees".  Has anyone heard about either of these?  And I wonder what the best response is to people who now think every bee they is a Killer Bee.

i googled it, but didn't find anything.

In regards to the AHB (Africanize Honey Bee) aka killer bees. Come to Florida. That is what they consider every feral bee hive. I believe that may be the prevailing attitude in Texas also.

I'm kind of in your neighborhood Brit and I didn't hear anything but looked up the link from  Brendhan.  Around here people get into trouble shredding (rotocycling).  One of my neighbors, polio victim who couldn't run, got about 600 or more stings a few years ago when he hit a log on the ground while shredding.  Was hospitalized for awhile.

I was having some brush removed in my back trap when the guy on his Bobcat found three bee trees.  Only one hive objected to his machinery.  I gave him a bee veil to wear and he planned on working in the area in the morning when the bees were calmer.  Since he only was able to work in the afternoons thereafter he just left it alone.  He and his dad have run into this problem lots in this area.

Knowing what I know now about the feral bees in this area, and we have a bunch, I would keep a bee veil handy whenever I was on a tractor.  I'm going to suggest to my local feed store that they stock the veils as they are not that expensive and would keep someone from panicking if they did run into some bees.

I saw a program on the discovery channel many years ago about "killer bees" and they talked about a man and his dog that were killed while he was out jogging.  For some reason I thought it was in Arizona.  It's probably just another urban legend.  After watching that show, I'm really glad I live in the North West!  No AHB here yet.   :-D
