Good Job Brooklyn. Your blog is of to a great start. Tell the kids, SO WHAT !!! my mid life is invested to help the enviroment insted of throwing it away, on say a sports car.  :-D

Yep! Back when we started (40 hives ago) we were shocked by some of the prices.  Buy quality, buy quantity, by locally when ever possible.
Tell the kids to go to college, get a good job, work hard, and save a lot and they will never miss the inheritance. :bee: :bee: :bee:
Nice start on the blog.

Brooklyn,1suggestion from reading your blog. If you are going to use a telescoping cover you really need an inner cover. if the bees propolize it to the box,it will be total chaos to remove it.If you don't want an inner cover,a migratory top that fits flush to the outside edges of the box may be better suited.

Noticed in your blog that you are starting with small cell foundation.  Are you purchasing small cell bees?

I am confused about the tops and the inner covers too, and sorry, Jim, but you've added to that confusion.

My limited understanding 5 minutes ago used to be that migratory lids like I use are at least a couple of inches around the sides and sit flush on the sides of the super.  So there is a fair space between the tops of the frames and the ceiling.  That migratory cover, Jim, seems to be something else entirely.  (a tea tray maybe?)  Now, I think I saw one telescoping lid.  Are the sides of these designed to sit outside the sides of the super, and have only a small space above the frames?  This inner cover has got me beat, too.  I've seen pictures on the forum, but I don't understand the purpose of them or of a bee escape.  Why would there be more burr comb under a telescoping cover?

Brooklyn, I think your son is right, that this is your midlife crisis, but I suppose you can't help that.  Thanks for the blog.

Migratory tops have only 2 sides which are located on each end (front and back of hive).  They usually do not come down very far over the hive.

Telescoping tops have 4 sides which come down on all four sides of the hive.  They usually are wider on the sides which means they come down farther over the edges of the hive.

that link that was given is about as good a picture of the differences as you can get.  migratory covers are designed to allow hive to be stacked for transportation.  they are also much less expensive and if you want to add wood on the sides to help keep weather out, it's easy to do.

The problem with a telescopic and no inner cover is that there is no where to pry it loose (and it will not be loose, it will be glued down).  With a migratory there is no part covering the gap where you would pry it up.  With the telescopic you can't get a hive tool where you need it to pry it off, hence one of the reasons for the inner cover... the other being to prevent condensation...
