One of the guys I work with told me today while we was riding to work that he ran out of honey and went to Kroger to get some.   He bought a bottle of sugar free honey and thought that it would be better on his peanut butter sandwiches than normal honey.   Then he got home and read the back of the bottle.   Imitation honey on the label in small print.   I told him to bring me the old jar of honey I gave him last and I would refill it.

Has anyone else seen anything like this?

Yep go to your local dollar store.  It's all over though it's cheaper then honey.  I know our local dollar store carries it in little 8 oz. bears for a buck.  Never have gave it a try though seems to me i have the real thing so no use spending money on fake stuff.  I must say the sugar free should have tipped him off though.

Sugar free honey - definitely a contradiction in terms.  I bought some baklava at Sams Club once - awful stuff - should of read the label first, the main ingredient was high fructose corn syrup.  Some things should be against the law.

This makes me very sad. What is our society coming to?

Of course, I buy imitation, lower calorie maple syrup, which will also bug me should I ever be successful at getting syrup out of my own trees. :-\

I looked up a ton of info one time on making syrup. One thing I did find out was that it didnt necessarily have to be sugar maples. One farm was making it out of shagbark hickory with pretty good success.

Go to the old Kentucky Fried Chicken and pick you up a pack of their 'honey' and read the label. HFCS with just a touch of honey added

Um, I frequently get sick when I eat at KFC. Don't know why. Food tastes good but everything just looks dirty. And fake honey? I grew up on KFC but it seems that they've lost their way.

AllenF

I tend to just stick to chicken and mac n cheese when I am at KFC, but today I did get some of their honey sauce to look at it.   I was really surprised that they even put honey in it at all.   I guess there was too much fallout over calling it honey with no honey in it.

The only use I could see of "sugar free honey" is maybe for diabetics who really need a fix. Still, High fructose corn syrup is still a sugar, right?

Good question.  Corn sugar is sugar.  I did a search for sugar free honey and found lots of products online.   A lot were for diabetics.  Here are the ingredients for one.   Maltitol syrup, natural and artificial flavor, acesulfame K, malic acid.   The other one had these ingredients.  Xylitol, spring water, xanthan gum, natural honey flavor, citric acid, sorbic acid.  And it only has 19 cals per Tbsp.

By the way, how does one get natural honey flavor in the imitation honey?

Sounds nasty!

Yes, HCFS is pure sugar.

Now i may be wrong here but i thought that people with sugar problems could eat a small amount of honey.  Due to the fact that it's easier to break down then other sugars.  You guys talk about using chemicals in food watched a program on planet green while i was channel surfing.  Saw one show where they used a chemical to make lemons taste sweet.

My wife made Baklava for X mas last year... used almost a Pt of honey... lordy lordy lordy it was good! think it could be the best use of honey so far.  Isn't sugar free honey an oxymoron  :?

Chemicals are used to flavor many (most) processed foods. One executive from a chemical company bragged that McDonalds would have no flavor if it weren't for their chemicals. When you see "natural flavors" on an ingredients label, it's chemicals. Here's an example of the level of sophistication that goes into helping you never taste anything bitter again in your life (unless you eat real food):

There are is a growing theory that HFCS may be the CAUSE of increasing youth diabetics.  I would think, along with others, that HFCS is the worst thing a diabetic cold eat.

AllenF

A diabetic can not eat HFCS.   It is corn sugar.
